Objective of Grinding Machine Safety
The objective of this Grinding Machine Safety standard is to ensure that all hazardous moving machinery within normal reach is completely guarded or fenced.
Grinding Machines – Pedestal Mounted
Every power driven grinding machine used must be marked in conspicuous place the manufacturer’s rated speed of the spindle in Revolutions per minute.
No grinding wheel of a grinding machine must be operated at a speed exceeding that of the manufacturer’s rated speed.
Every grinding wheel used must be concentrically mounted on the spindle by means of a robust metal flange of adequate width, and with suitable compressible material fitted between the flanges and the wheel.
The grinding wheel of every grinding machine used must be provided with a substantial guard that must enclose the wheel as far, as is practicable.
The work-rest must be a maximum of 3 mm from the grinding face of the wheel.
Every grinding machine used must be provided with a strong transparent shield that must be kept adjusted to protect the operator’s eyes.
Notices to the effect that eye protection is mandatory when using the grinding machine must be posted in a conspicuous place at every grinding machine.
No grinding machine must be operated or used unless the operator or user is wearing suitable eye and face protection.
A full-face shield of Polycarbonate is the minimum eye / face protection required to be worn when operating or using a grinding machine.
The wheel of every grinding machine must be regularly dressed to ensure optimum safety.
A competent person must inspect every grinding machine at least once per month and each time after it is used, with a view to the safety thereof and the findings of that insp0ection must be recorded in the appropriate register.
Portable Angle Grinders
The spindle speed for every angle grinder must be clearly indicated on the body of that grinder.
No cutting or grinding disc must be used on an angle grinder where the spindle speed exceeds the manufacturer’s rated speed of the disc.
No grinding disc must be used for cutting operations and no cutting disc must be used for grinding operations.
No guard must be removed from any angle grinder unless for maintenance purposes.
Any guard removed for maintenance must be replaced immediately after the maintenance is complete.
No angle grinder must be used without the guard fixed in place.
Suitable eye / face protection must be worn by any person operating or using any angle grinder.
The minimum eye / face protection required to be worn is a FULL-FACE POLYCARBONATE FACE SHIELD.
The user or operator of an angle grinder must take adequate precautions to prevent injury to any person in the vicinity of the grinding operation.
The cutting or grinding disc of any portable angle grinder must be securely fitted to the machine using only the correct tools and parts.
No guard, fence or other protection devices of any machine must be tampered with by anyone not authorized to do so, and if a guard or fence is removed for maintenance purposes, then it must be replaced as soon as possible after the maintenance is complete.
Only competent persons are allowed to carry out maintenance work on grinding machines.
